"White" Japanese calligraphy



"" (haku, or shiro). It is translated as white, pure, bright.
This character is written by Kanzi,
Regular script.

Etymology : This character originally
showed an acorn.
The character acquired its current meaning of white from the color of the acorn's meat.

The original meaning has been lost
.

Original meanings and forms change really during long time.
It often happens in human society.

  1. Ruma, this is really beautifully drawn and I didn't expect that it resembles an acorn. I know this character means 'bai' in Chinese and has same meaning: white.

  3. I know this character for a long time, but I didn't know it originally showed an acorn. This character has positive meanings, and the draw is also simple, so I like it. :-P
