"Travel" Japanese calligraphy

"" (ryo, tabi). It is translated as trip, journey, travel, traveler, traveller.

This character is written by Kanzi,
Regular script.

Etymology : Ideogrammic compound
旗 (flag, streamer) + 从 (obey)

"旗" means that people line up.
"从" means that people obey an order.

The pair of this character expresses the movement of army corps.
"旅" occurred from that state.

Japanese loves the sound of this words called "TABI".
Haiku and Waka (the 31-syllable Japanese poem) comparing the life to a trip often.

Travel is admiration of the eternity...

  4. It is obvious that when it was created this Kanji, people didn't travel because of tourism.
P.S. Dear Ruma, I have a question for You. Can You show to us the Kanji read "DOO" or "TOO" (radical 212 repeated 3 times and meaning "dragons moving")? Thanks in advance!

  8. Well, this should be my favorite calligraphy of all. It is written on my soul. How I love travel though I certainly have done very little since my job ended so suddenly in Feb 2009. However, I was blessed to see a great deal of the world, including those two short, wonderful trips to Japan which I will cherish forever.
