Karatsu Kunchi festival " Enjoy " Japanese calligraphy



This festival began in 1661.
Construction began in 1819 for colorful floats.
There are a total of 14 decorative floats.




They walk through the old town for three days.
November 2 to 4 every year.





All of these floats are designated as historically important cultural assets.






Traditional craftsmen keep these cultural property
using precious materials and outstanding workmanship.








 " " (gaku・raku). It is translated as music, comfort, enjoyment, etc.
   This character is written by Kanzi, Regular script.
 
Etymology : It is Ideogrammic compound. 
   糸 (“string”) + 木 (“wood”)

There are many decorations at the time of the festival.

Traditional and artistic floats are all set

Harvest festival  " Grass " Japanese calligraphy




About 2,600 years ago, paddy field remains in Japan.
The history of farming is old.






The Emperor has always cherished paddy rice.
It is the tradition of our country.





Rice cultivation requires cooperation and perseverance.






吹くからに 秋の草木のしをるれば  むべ山風を 嵐といふらん
文屋 康秀 (? - 885)  古今和歌集




" " (sō・kusa). It is translated as grass, weed, herb, etc.
  This character is written by Kanzi, Semi-cursive script.

    Etymology : It is phono-semantic compound. 
   semantic 艸 ( grass, plant )  +  phonetic 早 (first)
    
         Grass growing is certainly fast!



For, "All flesh is like grass, and all of man's glory like the flower in the grass. 
The grass withers, and its flower falls; but the Lord's word endures forever."  
1 Peter 1:24 - 25

人はみな草のごとく、その栄華はみな草の花に似ている。

At dusk harbor Yokohama " Nightfall " Japanese calligraphy





ぬばたまの 夜渡る月を おもしろみ 吾が居る袖に 露ぞ置きにける

     作者未詳 『万葉集』 巻7-1081


The English translation of this Waka is as follows.
" Where I saw the moon crossing the night in the darkness as a wind stream
Unnoticature on my sleeve glittering glowing balls appeared. "







夏の夜の 臥すかとすれば ほととぎす  鳴くひとこゑに 明くる東雲

   古今和歌集  紀貫之

The English translation of this Waka is as follows.
" Despite having finally fallen asleep on the summer evening, sun rises along with the crying voice of the crowd. "






有明の つれなくみえし 月はいでぬ  山郭公 まつ夜ながらに

     新古今和歌集 巻第三 夏歌  藤原良経 (1169-1206)

The English translation of this Waka is as follows.
" A ruthless moon came out, but Lesser cuckoo did not show up even if I waited all night. " 







"" (bo, or kure). It is translated as get dark, sunset, nightfall, dusk, etc.
This character is written by Kanji, Regular script.

Etymology : Phono-semantic compound
 phonetic   (“end”) + semantic (“sun”)

Cherry blossom day.  March 27, every year in JAPAN




Cherry blossom began to bloom.






Japan is the brightest " ONE " week.






I want to show you real cherry blossoms.

世の中に絶えて桜のなかりせば 春の心はのどけからまし
If there are not cherry blossoms at all in the world, the heart of the spring will be quiet leisurely.
(The feeling that cherry blossoms are impatient for is expressed ironically.)










Japanese three major giants of cherry trees
These three of them are registered as the first natural monument of the country on October 12, 1922.

(Age over 2000 years old)
Hokuto-shi, Yamanashi Prefecture
Height of the tree 13.6m, trunk lap 10.6m.
A giant tree of the maximum grade oldest in Japan.


 (Age over 1500 years old)
Motosu-shi,
Gifu Prefecture
Height of the tree 17.2m, trunk lap 9.1m, the spread are East-West 24m, north and south 21m

 Height of the tree 19m, trunk lap 9.5m, spread east and west 22m, north and south 17m

Signs of the spring " Ume " Japanese calligraphy




The Ume blossoms (Japanese apricot) have begun to bloom from the middle of February.










"" (bai, or ume). It is translated as plum, prune.
This character is written by Kanzi,
Regular script.

Etymology : Phono-semantic compound
semantic
(tree, wood)  +  phonetic (every)

The tree to tell about spring of every year.
The Ume blossoms may be the roles.






The Ume blossoms flower earliest in the Far East.
Thereafter,
cherry blossoms, peach blossoms will bloom in sequence.

The wind is still cold.
